Three stages of Labor, Distress Signs, When and How to Assist.
Kidding is stimulated by the fetus release of corticosteroids. This stimulates the doe to release PGF2a (lutalyse essentially) and the process starts. As the time gets close the udder may fill, over a few days or weeks but often quickly over 24 hours. Pelvic ligaments next to the tail relax and you will see a dip in the skin to the right and left of the tail. There is also a normal clear to slightly cloudy mucous discharge. This is the cervical plug which has protected the baby from the outside world for the last 5 months. This will be released from an hour to a week before delivery.
****** Stage One labor *****
Signs, length, distress
Does ready to kid may show several signs that they are close.
Usually the doe is uncomfortable, is having slight contractions, and isolates herself. Some does moan, but some does moan as they are getting larger anyway so know your does. Some does will lose the cervical plug or mucous plug discussed above at this time as well. She will have a hard time finding where she wants to be and her vulva may look swollen or enlarged. This can last an hour up to ½ a day. Usually first time moms are on the longer end as it takes their bodies longer to prepare for what lies ahead.
Does that remain in stage one labor for over 12-24 hours is a sign to assess the situation.
******* Stage Two labor *********
Signs length and distress
Contractions in stage 2 should be strong enough to produce a baby. Does will lie down or stand up and squat to contract. When the doe starts pushing, you may see a water bag protruding from the vaginal opening. The bag may burst or may come out intact. A second bag, filled with dark fluid, may appear. These bags consist of membranes containing amniotic fluid. They surround and protect the kid(s) up until the time of birth. The next thing you will likely see are the tips of a kid’s front toes, with a tiny nose resting on top. This is the exciting moment you’ve been waiting for — the goat labor sign that indicates the beginning of a normal delivery. Most babies arrive within 30 minutes of these contractions.
Does that take longer than 2 hours to deliver or does that have a fetus visible that don’t deliver in 20-30 minutes is a problem. Sometimes assistance is needed sooner depending on the presentation of the baby.
Normal presentations that don’t alarm are when you see two feet with the dewclaws toward the ground, hopefully followed by a nose, or even one foot and a nose. Two rear feet is not too big of a deal most of the time either, however, their dewclaws are hopefully pointing up toward the sky.
Troubling sights are only a nose, a front and a back foot, a tail, or possibly two feet that look fine but belong to different babies (maybe they are obviously different sizes).
******* Stage Three Labor ******
Signs length and distress
This is delivery of the placenta and the return of the uterus to its normal or pre kidding state. Normal placenta passage should occur in 6 hours. After that, assistance may be warranted. You may only need to add weight to the placenta to facility gravity removing it and some medication to increase the involution of the uterus, such as oxytocin and penicillin. After 24 hours, we recommend veterinary care, possible uterine flushes and possible aggressive therapy depending on the health status of the doe.
If does become lethargic, develop a fever or uninterested in the baby and the placenta is retained, I suggest aggressive therapy as above as it may be signs of infection become systemic to the rest of her body.
******* When Its time to Assist ************
Gloves and Lube. Lots of lube. Short finger nails. No jewelry. Point fingers straight with thumb along-side. Ease them into vagina. Keep fingers together at all times. No poking with a single finger. They move as a group, move your wrist and forearm to make the movements.. STOP pushing forward with each contraction…just rest your hand where it is. When contraction done, continue easing forward. You are feeling for muscular ring which is cervix, which should be open. If you use the flats of your fingers and press carefully up, down, and side to side (moving slowly and carefully) you should be able to feel the bony pelvis surrounding the vaginal vault which your hand is in. Just beyond the muscular ring of the cervix is the uterus, which is typically right near the brim of the pelvis
You are trying to feel for head, legs, feet, within vagina, or is it all beyond cervix and pressed up against pelvic brim and unable to pass through?
Get a hay bale if still having difficulty, put it under doe’s belly to lift her hind legs off ground so that kid slips further back into doe. Need to get both legs together along with head.
****** Difficult Positions******
The tail and the head turned back are some of the most common presentations that warrant assistance. The third that always needs assistance is going to be feet from two different babies.
Head back is just a hard one. You really need to get the baby back in the birth canal or uterus in order to grasp the head. it has to be turned forward to deliver. (That being said I have seen some come out head turned but I don’t recommend it if possible to avoid.)
It is hard to turn a head as they are slippery boogers. Try grabbing inside the lower jaw if possible, in the eye sockets when necessary and if you can be gentle (the eyes almost always retract when you do this but damage is possible) or a small head snare the goes behind the ears and in the mouth to keep the head pointed the right directions. Get head and at least one leg coming your way, two if possible, and usually the baby will come on out.
******** Baby is Out *********
Kid needs lots of warmth, lots of colostrum and lots of stimulation. If kids are weak and fading do karo every 5 minutes on kids that are fading until you see an improvement or loose them. People put too much stuff in babies sometimes trying to save them when really they need mostly supportive care, fluids, warmth and stimulation.
Be prepared for kidding. Have supplies needed as suggested in group files.
