Orbeez and Pets

By Deb Haines

What is an Orbeez?

Expandable water toys are novelty items made from a superabsorbent polymer. They are toys that expand after putting them into water for anything between a few hours up to several days, depending on size.

Water beads, also known as Orbeez, are a type of polyacrylamide gel . They come in a variety of colors and sizes, and can be found in many stores.

They are not toxic to pets, again Orbeez are made from a non-toxic material called polyacrylate superabsorbent polymer. This means that the gel balls will not cause any harm if they are ingested by your pet as far as being toxic.

The danger is with the pet choking or intestinal blockage. The beads could absorb moisture in the dog’s digestive tract, causing the beads to expand and potentially leading to an obstruction or other gastrointestinal issues.

It is best to seek veterinary advice right away.

How can they block my pet ?

Orbeez will expand in the stomach and intestines making it difficult for food or liquids to pass through. This can lead to vomiting and dehydration.

Watch for symptoms

Symptom of Orbeez ingestion is vomiting. Other symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal pain, and lack of appetite. If your dog is exhibiting any of these symptoms it is important to take them to the vet right away.

Best advice is to call your local hands on vet or emergency hospital if your pets has swallowed Orbeez.

**The Vet Corner groups encourage members to establish a relationship with their local veterinarian, don’t wait until an emergency.**
