Dog That Bites

When dogs reach certain ages there are often  hormonally and mentally predictable behaviors that develop – there are age-related behavior stages, during which it can be easier to adjust unwanted behaviors than when older. Spaying or neutering ASAP may minimize unwanted behaviors such as inter-dog aggression, but positive results can’t be guaranteed, nor should they be expected. Larger breed dogs with unwanted behavior can be very dangerous for children and smaller pets. It is strongly suggested to find a VETERINARY behaviorist,  not just someone calling themselves a behaviorist.  They should have DACVB after their name.

A biting dog is a significant potential risk for someone to be severely hurt. Training by a “trainer” may make a dog a well-trained (when he wants to/can be) dangerous dog. A VETERINARY behaviorist consultation, in cases of biting dogs, is strongly advised, as they are better equipped to DIAGNOSE and manage these cases than are trainers. There are many training  “techniques” that can signi worsen these behaviors. Biting can be associated with genetics, age and lack of appropriate socialization at even a few weeks old.

It is strongly advised that a biting dog be taught to wear a basket muzzle at all times while seeking assistance in managing/preventing risks.
