Skin issues are extremely frustrating for both owners AND veterinarians. Many, many, many, many skin disorders, (and indeed, causes for itching if present) have EXACTLY the same appearance and/or symptoms, so diagnosing on only appearance is usually impossible. And, there is no SINGLE treatment for all of these disorders. Often owners try all sorts of “notions & potions” advised by Dr. Google, which usually allows the disorder to worsen, which can result in a more difficult diagnosis and treatment. It can take time and persistence to tease out causes. Diagnostic tests are often needed, especially if empirical (best medical guess) treatments are ineffective – microscopic exam of skin cells, blood and urine tests, skin biopsy, hormone testing (thyroid, Cushing’s, etc.). Sometimes, based on results, empirical treatments are tried. If no resolution, consultation with a veterinary dermatologist may be considered as they can often tease out these sorts of disorders. Better than returning time and time and time again to your general practitioner with the same results. A specialist is OFTEN LESS COSTLY in the long run. https://www.acvd.org/ Or, In the UK: https://findavet.rcvs.org.uk/find-a-vet-surgeon/by-specialist/dermatology/ By Dr. Kathy S ©Copyrights 2026
